We’re currently gearing up for our winter season with the Extreme Weather Shelter program for the Homeless Network of Yakima County. This last season we had four shelters open; three here in Yakima and another in Sunnyside. We had two shelters for men and one for women here in Yakima, all with a capacity of 15 beds each, 240 individuals were served. We also had a family Shelter in Sunnyside which served twelve families, eleven of which were placed in permanent housing within two to four weeks of their arrival at the shelter. We have placed a total of 60 plus homeless families into shelter this calendar year.
We are now entering into the seventh Extreme Weather Shelter season. Once again we are using four shelters, three here in Yakima, one family shelter in Sunnyside. This year our capacity for men goes up to 50.
We have the S Street Family Hostel which is a transitional housing solution for homeless families with children. Sustainability is measured and shortfalls are worked on and reconciled wherever possible. These families are then launched to permanent housing when they are ready.
